Split bill calculator

Split a restaurant bill by what each person ordered. Add who had what, and tax and tip are shared in proportion - so everyone pays their fair share, down to the cent. No signup.

Who's splitting?

What did everyone order?

Add each item, then tap who had it. Shared items split evenly.

Tax and tip

Percentages are of the subtotal, before tax.

How the split is worked out

  1. Each person pays for the items they had. Shared items are divided evenly among the people who had them.
  2. Tax and tip are shared in proportion to each person's food. If your food is 30% of the subtotal, you pay 30% of the tax and tip.
  3. Amounts are rounded to the cent, and any leftover cent goes to whoever has been rounded down the most, so the totals match the bill exactly.

Frequently asked questions

How does the split bill calculator work?

Add everyone at the table, enter each item with who had it, then add the tax and tip. Each person pays for their own items, their share of anything shared, and a share of the tax and tip in proportion to what they ordered. The totals update as you type.

How is tax and tip split?

In proportion to what each person ordered. If your food was 30% of the subtotal, you pay 30% of the tax and 30% of the tip. That's fairer than splitting tax and tip evenly, which makes whoever ordered the least pay part of everyone else's.

Is the tip percentage calculated before or after tax?

Before tax. A tip percentage here is of the subtotal, which is the most common way to tip. If you'd rather tip on the total, switch the tip to $ and enter the exact amount.

How do I split a shared item?

Tap everyone who had it. Its price is divided evenly among them, and nobody else pays for it. New items start out shared by everyone, so untick anyone who didn't have it.

Does it always add up to the bill?

Yes. When an amount can't be divided evenly, the leftover cents go to whoever has been rounded down the most, so the per-person totals always add up to the bill exactly.

Do I need to sign up, and is anything saved?

No signup. The calculator runs entirely in your browser - nothing you type is sent or stored. If you'd rather not type items at all, PayMate can read them from a photo of the receipt.

Skip the typing: scan the receipt

PayMate reads every item, the tax and the tip off a photo of the receipt. You just tap who had what.
